The ARD Foundation helped buy the latest model of a RetnoCAM machine for the Santa Casa Misericordia Hospital in Brazil. This equipment allows doctors to capture and document images of retinoblastoma – a deadly type of cancer that occurs in the eyes, usually with children under six years of age – so they can monitor the tumor in hopes of saving the patient’s life. If not treated quickly and effectively, this type of cancer can kill the patient incredibly fast. Without this machine, the only available treatment for retinoblastoma is the complete removal of the eyeball. As of now, this is the only RetnoCAM machine available in Brazil.
